Entertainment Discovery App

UP ENT. needed a mobile experience that could surface relevant entertainment content to users without requiring them to know what they were looking for. The challenge was designing a discovery mechanism that felt effortless.

(Problem Statement)

The entertainment discovery space is saturated with algorithmic recommendation engines that optimize for engagement metrics. UP ENT. wanted to take a different approach, one that prioritized genuine content discovery over addictive scroll patterns.

(Process)
01.
Exploration

Studying discovery behaviors

Research into how people actually find and choose entertainment content.

  • Conducted competitive audit with competitors to analyze discovery patterns
  • Conducted user interviews
  • Mapped content consumption user journeys
02.
Defining

Defining a MVP product

Scoped the minimum viable product by prioritizing the critical user flows and screens needed for initial launch.

  • Scoped six critical screens for the initial launch: splash, login and registration, goal selection (home), tool browse and search, listing layout, and reviews
  • Prioritized the consumer discovery flow, from onboarding through goal selection to browsing and evaluating tools
  • Deferred secondary features to post-launch, focusing the MVP on validating core discovery and listing behavior
03.
Concepting

Exploring early concepts

Translated the defined MVP scope into early concept directions, exploring layout, navigation, and information hierarchy before committing to a visual language.

  • Sketched low-fidelity wireframes for the six core screens to test layout and flow.
  • Explored multiple navigation models for moving between discovery, browsing, and evaluation.
  • Established the information hierarchy for the home, search, and listing screens.
04.
Visual Design

Defining the visual language

Established the full visual system, from typography and color to a reusable component library, translating the early concepts into a cohesive, cinematic design language built to scale across the product.

  • Defined a typography-forward hierarchy that anchored the cinematic, editorial-inspired aesthetic
  • Built a color palette balancing brand expression with contrast and accessibility across screens
  • Created a reusable component library, including the content card system for tools, listings, and reviews
  • Established layout patterns and spacing systems to keep the experience consistent across the six core screens
05.
Prototyping

Building interactive prototypes

Translated the visual designs into interactive prototypes to test the end-to-end discovery flow under realistic conditions before committing engineering resources.

  • Built clickable prototypes covering the full journey from onboarding through browsing to reviews
  • Simulated core interactions including goal selection, tool search, and listing navigation
  • Prepared the prototypes for usability testing with target users
06.
Validation

Testing with real users

Validated the prototypes with target users, refining flows and interactions based on direct feedback before development began.

  • Ran usability sessions with target users across the core discovery flow
  • Identified friction in onboarding and search, iterating on the designs in response
  • Validated the listing and reviews experience against real user expectations
07.
Launch

Shipping the app

Partnered with development through handoff and design QA to ship the MVP simultaneously to the iOS App Store and Google Play Store

  • Supported development through detailed design handoff and QA to launch

(Reflection)

Consumer products live and die by their first 30 seconds. The onboarding experience is not a tutorial. It is the product's first conversation with a stranger. Every decision in that window must earn the next second of attention.
